Tech Literacy Question 3

Page history last edited by Greg 9 years, 5 months ago

What sort of literacy is needed in this technological era?

Overall, the basic literacy skills of reading and writing in order to create websites, operate a computer, operate a cell phone, use emails, and communicate internationally through social media or other online communities. Within particular discourses, Individuals need to have the knowledge to adequately use a computer to research materials online, web-surf, type word documents, create blogs, and resourceful websites. Computer literacy is a must on an international level, in order for everyone to be afforded the literacy skills within this technological era. Due to the ever so advancing technology world, it is important for individuals to be educated about computer literacy in elementary stages.

A multimodal literacy is needed--the ability to manage the many forms of media/input and respond appropriately with comprehensible output (whether that means manipulating visual, aural, text-based, or other forms).

We agree with the above--digital literacy is necessary.  Also needed is an understanding of how digital information is created and the necessity of questioning and challenging authorship of digital information.  Learners must be able to produce, collaborate, and share digital content, not just consume it.
