Selfe extends our traditional understanding of technological literacy that only involves computer use and productivity.

She adds to it the idea of being critically engaged with technology, being able to understand its effects, and being well-versed in the discourse community around it. This includes language use, jargons (online language) and approach it critically.

To Baron, technology literacy means expanding the definition of what constitutes technology, whether it be pencil. Writing itself is, "a way of engineering materials in order to accomplish an end," (16). Writing itself started out as a way to mark business transaction. Computer was originally used for calculation. [And I think that Baron's examples from Plato and Thoreau show us how humans often resist new technology at the same we become dependent on it, which creates a contradiction that over time becomes insignificant as new and controversial technologies become so integrated into human society that they become the catalysts for continued evolution of our world.]

Lastly, Postman talks about how technicalization and information flow affect people's lives. He cites many personal examples, and seem to be against both information overload and regulations of information. Postman's view of technology is like that of a virus. Postman sees it as intrinsically problematic.

Out of these views of technology literacy, our group thinks that Postman does not really concern with literacy comparing to the other two. Postman sees it as a function of social power. We align our view with Selfe in the way that technology literacy can be more than functional and can be used as a tool for empowerment. Baron extends the definition of what technology literacy means. Baron encapsulates that what we accustom to in our modern life is actually technology even when we might not think it is. This is a part of understanding technology literacy.

In fact, I liked Baron's idea that technological literacy "encapsulates that what accustom to in our modern life." I think here Baron refers to the idea of adaptation. That is, part of the definition of the technological literacy is our ability to adapt to modern technology.
